Nautilus haven’t changed much over the past 500 million years, although there are currently only about 6 species left today, all found in the Indo-Pacific region. The shell of the Nautilus is separated into chambers that contain gas and water. By changing the amount of gas within each chamber, the nautilus adjusts its buoyancy, and can rise and sink in the water.
